The Council Oaks

Comanches and Tonkowas worshipped and celebrated under the fourteen trees of the Council Oaks a hundred years before Europeans first set foot in the new world. Tejas Indian maidens believed that brewing acorns from the “Tree-Gods” with wild honey would resurrect their lovers from battles lost. The most famous of the treees is the Treaty Oak, which is a living symbol of Texas history.

According to local legend, in 1841, Stephen F. Austin signed Texas’ first boundary treaty with local Comanches under the tree, forever cementing the tree’s name in Texas lore. Over the next 150 years, the Treaty Oak survived a fire, political threats, urban development, and a determined assassination attempt that drew worldwide attention.

In an age of vulnerability and change, the Treaty Oak is a symbol of unwavering strength and endurance. It is an symbol of compassion, concern and willingness to take action on the part of the people who have stepped up to save it.

The Treaty Oak sits just a few blocks from our offices in downtown Austin. Our firm's name is a tribute to this wonderful symbol of enduring freedom.
